Earlier today Activison confirmed that a sequel to Bungie’s 2014 title Destiny will be coming in 2017; they also announced that they expect a “large” expansion for Destiny to release later this year.
“Activision Publishing, along with its partners at Bungie, expects to bring a large new expansion to Destiny in 2016 and to release a full game sequel in 2017.”
Destiny and Bungie fans have been voicing their strong willed opinions online lately as Destiny’s Year 2 content moved away from traditional DLC packs that were seen in Year 1 to free events, often a week long, and micro-transactions. This left fans relatively in the dark and unsure what to expect in the days, weeks, or months to come for the game.
Bungie elaborated further in today’s weekly blog post that a large update, presumably the aforementioned expansion, is scheduled this spring and will increase the Light level, add new gear, and PvE challenges.
“Prior to the holiday break we mentioned a second, larger update slated for Spring. That content release will feature a significant Light increase, a bunch of new gear to earn and equip, and new challenges for PvE players seeking some more fun experiences and replayability.
Beyond that, the team is focused on delivering a large expansion later this year, and a full Destiny sequel in 2017.”
Of course, more details will be coming in future blog posts, but I’m sure fans are happy to hear and know what to expect in the long term.
