“Survival horror” is currently something of a risk term used in the community, with very few game purporting to be survival horror but never truly delivering on that promise. Could Madmind Studio be one of the few to create a rare gem that belongs in this genre?
Recently announced, Agony is Madmind’s first project as a new studio formed last year from select veteran developers who have worked on titles such as The Division & The Witcher III. Described as a first-person survival horror experience, players will apparently begin their journey as a tormented soul within the depths of Hell, with no memory of their past.
“The special ability to control people on their path, and even possess simple minded demons,
gives the player the necessary measures to survive in the extreme conditions they are in.
By exploring hostile environments and interacting with the other weary souls of the hellscape,
the hero will soon understand that there is only one way to escape from Hell, and it will require a meeting of (sic) the mystical Red Goddess.”
As a survival horror veteran myself, I’m equal parts skeptical and excited. Many great concepts have attempted to get this genre’s criteria right and have failed to do so, however, I don’t recall a survival horror title having been set in Hell itself, something that could well work in Agony‘s favour. Recently, id Software‘s DOOM proved that Hell can be a truly overwhelming and terrifying environment if done right, here’s hoping Agony can do the same. Some of the screenshots released so far do look rather promising though – what do you think?
