Just when you thought PAX couldn’t get any more awesome at PAX South this year a whole new event was announced focusing on the tabletop aspect of gaming. Put on by Penny Arcade and ReedPOP, PAX Unplugged will debut November 17 – 19, 2017 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
PAX Unplugged will still have the feel and experience familiar of any PAX event with the core difference being the focus on table top games. This will allow developers and designers of our favorite board, card, and roleplaying games to get some extra spotlight and show off what’s coming our way next. With panels, demos, tournaments, concerts and events this will be the ultimate experience for those game enthusiasts who like to unplug and play face to face.
With the recent resurgence in popularity of tabletop gaming, now appears to have been better than ever to move in this direction. Penny Arcade Co-founder Jerry Hopkins provided some insight, and reassurances about the new event, “With the rise of popularity of board games, we wanted to provide a dedicated space where fans can come together. We will continue to have tabletop games at every PAX, but Unplugged will focus on stepping away from the TV, monitor and phone to foster face-to-face multiplayer experiences.”
I know I absolutely look forward to this new event, a chance to check out the growing and changing landscape of tabletop gaming. Having been a tabletop roleplayer for nearly two decades now, I can say this is refreshing to see!
