I remember when they slimmed the PS2 down, I think if youre a fan its worth buying, but im more of an online play kind of person, and I heard it sucks for Playstation.

I dont think it is worth buying, I already have an Xbox and there arent enough exclusives on the PS3 that make me want to get the console :D

I find it odd how Sony keeps making these "new" versions of the PS3 and it gets people excited about them... when in reality what they have been doing is slowly taking features away with each version. First it was backwards compatibility they removed, now the ability to install linux... not a big deal but still odd.
But the main reason I stay away from the PS3 is because I like to play with people and chat with people while I'm playing my games, and I honestly know noone with a PS3 so... I've stayed away. I planned to get one for Final Fantasy back in the day but now I don't even have to do that since it's coming to xbox so more money to spend on other things :).

Backwards compatibility was a big deal for me too, since I don't own a PS2 at the moment. I suppose I will just have to suck it up and borrow someone elses if I ever need to.

As an owner of both the 360 and PS3 I will say for the $299 price tag it's a really good deal *provided you have an HDTV or monitor that displays at minimum 720p*. What you get out of the box:
Blu-ray player
Game system
Wifi
HDMI 1.3 (as opposed to 1.2 on 360 = better video and sound quality)
Accessories you'll need to buy: an HDMI and digital audio cable as they're not packaged in the box (or RGB cables) + a bluetooth headset and remote if you're planning to play online over PSN.
I will say this about PlayStation Network, they have some good downloadable games that I find of better quality to XBLA. Games such as Flower, Super Stardust HD and any of the PixelJunk series of games are really good. If you're however curious about Home it's a letdown. They have a lot of interesting spaces but it's really kind of boring and slow as you have to download them each time.
The system runs like a PC (ie, you download games, demos that then have to be installed before using) so it's not as quick to play as the 360. There are some breathtaking games though such as:
Metal Gear Solid 4
inFamous
LittleBigPlanet
Killzone 2
Uncharted Drakes Fortune
Heavenly Sword
Valkyria Chronicles
Not to mention there were a lot if games announced coming soon such as Uncharted 2, Gran Turismo 5, Heavy Rain, God of War III (plus I & II are being remastered to play on PS3) to name a few.
The system is going to get a better selection as time goes by. It is still a lot of money to invest if you already have a gaming system and if you're not interested in hi-def movies it may not be for you. The importance if this however is more price point competition and developers will try to find more interesting ways to use to each consoles strengths. Still a win-win IMHO.
I will add one last thing if you should decided to buy a PS3, look for a product called RealTriggers off eBay or Amazon.com for your DualShock 3 controller. You'll thank me later. :)
