A disorganized rant:
It's the 26th century and you'd think they'd have an aircraft that is capable of actually making a smooth landing.
Ask yourself, have you ever seen a Pelican actually land? Chances are you'll say no and you will be correct. (The Halo 2 trailer does not count, it was non-cannon).
If you think about it, the Pelican is always crashing. You try to take one down with 300 rockets, 400 fuel rods, 3 banshees, 2 hornets, 2 tanks, and God and the thing will still remain in the air. Uh-oh, a grunt shot a needle at the pelican and the craft combusts which kills the pilots.
Hell, why is it always the pilots that die? Everyone in the crash is 100% ok, but Captain Jiggles and Liutenant Dan who fly the aircraft die...every time.
Personally, I'd rather take on and entire Covenant fleet in my underwear with nothing more than two rocks and a stick (Johnson would be proud). It has got to be statistically safer than piloting a Pelican.
The Pelicans must be extremely cheap to produce because, it appears, that they have to mass produce pelicans 24/7 on all available human controlled worlds. They appear to be extremely common on the battlefield and are likely fairly common in regular civilian life (based on what is seen in ODST). If I were the UNSC or the UEG I'd rather pool my resources into producing semi-effective battleships. Hell, at the very least, improve the armor on the Pelican and add some landing gear.
I'm not saying the Pelican is ineffective, but if the Covenant used something more formidible than the Phantom, I'd say humanity would be double screwed in the dropship wars.
The only Pelican and Pilot duo that ever really did their part was Echo-419 and her pilot Foehammer. Foehammer and her Pelican survived the entire battle of Installation 04 (Halo 1). She got off the Pillar of Autumn, survived the Covenant attacks, and dominated over the Flood onslaught to ultimately die from a Banshee.
In retrospect I guess the Pelican that Johnson and crew got away on was superior but, Foehammer takes the best Pelican and Pilot award for the games.
If I was ever approached and asked to pilot a Pelican, I'd be inclined to strip down and ask: "Do you have any rocks and a stick?"
