In the mood for some metal being scrapped? Oh, well perhaps Scrap Metal may suit your need. Scrap Metal is Slick Entertainment's latest game -- which are the makers of the 360 version of n+. Now, don’t get confused with Scrap Metal being a RC racing game. No, it’s actually cute little cars with a big verity of weapons. If you’re into guns with fast paced racing and a birds eye view camera, you’re in luck.

There really isn’t much of a story here. Each arena has its own boss whom you’re trying to beat. After you progress your way through all the mission arena's, the last one is saved for a chance to take on the arena boss. Usually these boss battles will take place in a race or even a hefty derby. After beating the boss you simply get their car (for some reason) and have the ability to customize it to your liking.
Scrap Metal offers 20 different customizable cars consisting of different classes. You can customize the paint job, decals, and accessories. Each vehicle comes with a unique weapon that pertains to that vehicle only. While you can’t change weapons, you can upgrade your weapon to make it more powerful – along with speed, grip and armor. The game features 8 different arenas of which there are an average of 8 missions.
Missions can very from many kinds of derbies, one on one duel, elimination, and of course different types of racing. While the missions stay the same per arena, the tracks and vehicles gradually change to get harder as progress. You didn’t think it was going to be as easy as 1 2 3 now did you?

I found while Scrap Metal may look small, it delivers a great blow when it comes to graphics and the physics engine. The graphics are bright and nice to look at you can really appreciate it when you’re firing your x2 Machine Gun turret at the car ahead of you to make it… you guessed it, "Scrap Metal". The fire and explosions work nicely with the environment.
The physics are where one major issue comes to play. Let me just put it this way; you’re in 1st place after a lucky 3 laps when all of a sudden at a simple turn your car losses grip and hits an object that will put you in 6th place. The quality of car control is bad. While some cars might have better grip and turning, most of the cars are just not sturdy enough to steer in the actual direction you want it to.
Sure, Scrap Metal is a fun game until you get to the 3rd arena and on. At this point you start to witness the clunkiness of how much little control you have over your car -- therefore this makes the game no fun to play. Although, the multiplayer and the amount of cars and arena/missions it has somewhat makes up for the bad controls. Is it worth the 1,200MSP($15)? No. But it would’ve been a great deal for 800. It does keep you coming back after a day or two of not playing it. After all this gun powder and metal, I’m in the mood for a XBLA game that does not have frustration: n+… oh wait.
+ Lots of customizable options
+ Fun Multiplayer
- You can easily go from 1st place to 8th with one accidental move
- The unreliable control over your car makes the game no fun

6.5/10
