My dad is getting us a new computer!!! :D:D:D

All I request is that it be fast, have a good processor, a good graphics card, flat pannel monitor, and not come with Vista (I hear bad things). I know there is a huge list but I would like your opinions! Also, a $1500 budget (Lol, my dad thinks thats the standard cost for a comp!)

YA.
I recomend customizing a Dell Laptop on their website. Thats always your best deal because you decide what you need,

IeatdUrcookie
February 5th, 2008, 09:14 PM
But aren't laptops really slow compared to PCs?

Tough Gandhi
February 5th, 2008, 09:34 PM
nope. There the same depending on what features you get

Originally I was thinking desktop, but you guys have changed my mind so I"ll get a laptop. But are you guys sure a capture card would work well with a laptop?

February 6th, 2008, 06:25 PM
Yup, just make sure it is compatible when you buy one...

Anyone here have Vista? If so, have you had any problems with it? I hear that people hate it, never really saw a reason they just said it sucked.

Sorry for the double post, but here is a quick build I made:

Inspiron 1525
SYSTEM COLOR Alpine White edit
PROCESSOR Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7250 (2.0GHz/800Mhz FSB/2MB cache)
OPERATING SYSTEM Genuine Windows Vista ® Home Basic Edition
HD DISPLAY Glossy, widescreen 15.4 inch display (1280x800)
VIDEO CARD Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
MEMORY 1GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 667MHz
HARD DRIVE Size: 120GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)
INTERNAL OPTICAL DRIVE CD Writer / DVD player (Combo Drive)
WIRELESS NETWORK CARDS Dell Wireless 1395 802.11g Mini-Card
INTEGRATED WEBCAM Integrated 2.0M Pixel Webcam
BATTERY OPTIONS 56Whr Lithium Ion Battery (6 cell)
SOUND OPTIONS High Definition Audio 2.0

I am concerned about the dial-up internet access, can I just choose "no ISP" and get some broadband connection? Another thing is the display, should I get anti-glare or glossy (what is the difference?)? PLEASE point out ANYTHING you think needs changing! I don't want to screw this up!

The only games I ever play really are Source games (Gmod mostly) so would that graphics card be good enough?

If it's for some gaming maybe 2gb+.

IeatdUrcookie

The graphics card can run those games, but the amount of FPS will drop considerably if graphics are turned to high. Also, the processor may be too slow, as most new games require a minimum of 2.0 GHz.

For a graphics card I would reccomend an NVIDIA 8600 or higher. Even an ATI will work ok, but most Intel graphics cards aren't very good and have some driver problems.

Can't upgrade the graphics card with this laptop. :( And 2.0gb is the best update for it. Should I look into a better laptop?

eZ NoXide
February 7th, 2008, 04:25 PM
Well what kind of laptop are you looking for? Gaming, multimedia, family, etc?

IeatdUrcookie
February 7th, 2008, 04:28 PM
Mainly gaming and multimedia. But my dad now says it can't be any higher than 1000 otherwise, we are getting a desktop which I don't want because If I had a desktop it would be too far away to use my capture card.

eZ NoXide
February 7th, 2008, 04:51 PM
Well If its for multimedia and Gaming Id go for a Toshiba they are the best in both I find, like I got a Qosmio and I can play any games on it even Crysis. But I bought mine on eBay for 1300, but You can still get a different kind of Toshiba. There is also other companies like Sony but they are expensive.

IeatdUrcookie
February 7th, 2008, 07:36 PM
will this be good? and the graphics card is, again, awful. (It should run Gmod and any other source game, right?) Is there anyway to customize it?

No but when I was looking to buy I was arguing over the F45 and the G35. Ended up getting the G35 because it has a built in TV tuner and some other stuff that had my interest. I bought my G35 at 1300$

IeatdUrcookie
February 7th, 2008, 09:32 PM
Other than those things, was there any big difference?

And can you name some of the other stuff that came with the G35?

eZ NoXide
February 7th, 2008, 09:42 PM
Well the G35 got rated 1 out of 100 by CNET

[Well the G35 got rated 1 out of 100 by CNET, But Im sure the F45 is just as good :D

I just did some research on the F45 and I say go for it, it looks like a solid good buy and well affordable for all you get.

OPERATING SYSTEM Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium

Alienware computers are extremely over-priced. They are really good computers, but you can find a different brand that's just as good, or better, for two thirds the price.

And cookie, that computer is pretty good it seems, but again, I'm not so sure about the graphics card. It may not be great, but it's good for the price and it will run Garry's Mod.
