Easily any Zepplin is legendary although for the sake of people knowing songs I'd go with the most overplayed song being Stairway. I guess other then that

The main reason I chose these well known songs rather than some more deep cuts is due to the impact these specific songs had and still have on people as well as influenced them. Most of the time I get introduced to a new band it's with the new single or most popular song then you get further engrossed with the band, also I probably missed a lot of other legendary artists but this is a quick list
