View Full Version : Forum Navigation

Hey, I guess since I am new here it may be a bit presumptuous to come in and immediately making a thread about something I don't like about this site. Needless to say the content here is great, but I'm having trouble navigating around sometimes and I just noticed a few things that could make it a bit easier:
1) The bread crumb at the top of the page is not linked to the different pages you were at, it can be easier to return to the forum from within a thread by clicking on those links instead of using the browsers back button because its alllllll the way up there in the top left hand corner of my screen haha.

2) The bottom of threads has a navigation link to go to the next and previous thread, but not one to get back to the parent forum. Again if I just read through an entire thread and I want to go back up to the forum I have to use the back button which is waaaaaay up in the top left! It would be way more convenient to have a link in between the "previous" and "next" options that links to the parent forum.

3) I like the reply to thread buttons at the top and bottom of the pages, but sometimes you see a thread that inspires you to make another thread in a similar vein, but needs to be distinct from the original. It can be nice to have a "Post new thread" button next to the "post reply" button for that purpose.

4) A quick navigation drop down menu is really convenient, especially on a site with as many separate forums as this one has. It makes it so much easier to switch between your favorite forums quickly, instead of hitting back a bunch of times just to find it.
Like I said, I don't want to step on any toes here, I just noticed these things and thought they could help improve the site and make the way users get around within it more efficient.

I agree with all that you said. Good advise.
I recently mentioned #1 on your list and apparently it works only in IE at the moment. It's being looked into. fyi

1 and 2 are just a glitch. We JUSSSSSTTT upgraded to this new style and have yet to work that one out.
3: I personally think that would just add clutter and confusion. I can see many new users accidentally making a new thread instead of replying to one.
4: I've never been a fan of quick nav. I don't intend to implement it anytime soon.
Thanks for the suggestions, though!

Your criticism is appreciated and noted... it's always good to hear feedback, one way or the other.
One of the reasons why you may have seen "that guy" playing with vB options on his screen in your class is that RUL just upgraded to version 5.0, as mentioned in this thread (http://www.readyuplive.com/content.php/6-Welcome-to-RUL-5.0).
Rest assured that the parent thread/sub-forum links issue that you mentioned has been noticed and is on the list of things to correct down the road. In the meantime, those links ARE functional while browsing RUL in Internet Explorer. If you would prefer dealing with IE over having to stretch for the back button, switch browsers until it gets fixed :)
As for the rest of the suggestions, I completely agree with you. Unfortunately I don't know enough about the hard code to say how difficult it would be to integrate them into the new layout. I'll leave that for your classmate/site owner:

Thanks for the suggestions!
Edit: I'll try to type faster next time so that my reply isn't SO outdated

cool, like I said I don't want to step on any toes and I know what a pain it is to upgrade VB.
If you want the code for #2 I can send it to you, it took me awhile to figure it out when I had to do it.

No IE, I am on a Mac, implementing the stuff i suggested is not to tough usually, although I am not familiar with the specific customization on this forum so its hard to say how smoothly it would go haha.

OMG, someone else on a Mac?!
I think that brings RUL's population of Mac users up to... 3.

My only gripe is that clicking the picture of your Avatar on the top right side does not take you to your profile but instead it takes you to the settings area.

Avy goes to settings. User name to profile. Took me a while to get use to it too.

I also use the bread crumbs to navigate around the site and was just about to post my own thread to inform you guys about the problem, but someone beat me to it :P

I noticed #1 too, and it's pretty annoying. Nice to know that it's just a glitch, and not a permanent part of the site.

Number one is fixed for every browser pending we don't find any issues with the fix, and pending Greenskull is in approval of the coding I've done :P For now.. enjoy it. If you see any site discrepancies tell me, it could have been something I broke with the fix and didn't noticed

Thanks so much rebel. It really drove me crazy. I see no bugs in it.
