Even though A World of Keflings has been out for quite some time now, NinjaBee has finally released new DLC for this incredibly popular Xbox Live Arcade game. This add-on, entitled It Came From Outer Space, is the newest add-on that gives you a little over two hours worth of Kefling fun in a new kingdom. If you couldn’t tell by the title of the DLC, it has an alien theme that is out of this world.
It Came From Outer Space, has a fairly simple storyline, but it is quite the attention-grabber. While there is an entirely new cast who bring their own distinctive personalities, we do see the return of a couple characters that can be found in the original game. The story is based around an alien ship that crash-landed in this new Kefling world. Your goal throughout this add-on is to gather tons of new resources, build a multitude of random and entertaining structures, and eventually help fix their ship so they can continue to explore the galaxy.

The main theme for this DLC is obviously the future. Overall, it's very nice and prevalent in almost everything; the buildings, characters, and even the landscape. The future theme, while being a far cry from the original game, does not lose any of the original charm. A great example of this is the music. While the music from a Tale of Three Kingdoms is mostly the same, It Came From Outer Space has new background music that plays while you work with your new space friends. It has a very techno feel to it, but it still has the laid-back, but busy feel that made A World Of Keflings' music so enjoyable. Keeping with the future theme and being a significant game changer are the robots that you have to help you. Back in the main game the only robot you saw was just a character in the fan cast. This time around they are active helpers like any other Kefling, except they are much faster and they are the only ones that can harvest the more advanced resources of the world. Not even your Avatar Giant can harvest everything the robots can. This adds a new layer of difficulty in the game because not only must you manage your alien Keflings, but you also have to be very effective in managing your robots. Because the robots are so significant, I was finally able to get attached enough to name them individually. With all the new future styled items, it's somewhat surprising that the new emotes are not space-aged. They are still fun and humorous, and it’s not bad that they aren’t high-tech because the multiplayer was still made much more enjoyable by it.

On top of the other features that make this add-on so great, there are a couple other things that I really enjoyed. The new characters in the game are incredibly witty and made me laugh on way more than one occasion with lines like, “You can always tell intelligence by the liver strings,” or when talking about their 'Radioactive Walrus Launcher.' You can also find a few missions that are a play on words that are quite clever. Another aspect that was great, were the different structures you had to build. There are a few that are based around oversized lobsters, pandas, and more. They definitely look interesting and funny to say the least. But, that’s to be expected with this kind of theme, which makes you wonder along the way what kind of crazy thing you have to build next. The DLC works around the same controls and objectives as the main game, so it is extremely easy to get right back into the groove of things.

While I can’t deny that I completely enjoyed every minute playing this game, there were a couple things that I saw as tiny drawbacks, and that was the lack of actual physical space and the respawning resources. This world is a bit smaller than those in the regular game and it proved to be a little difficult when trying to build several structures in the main area of the map, especially with the various openings on the ground. Things got crowded pretty quickly, and we found ourselves pushing all of the alien homes on top of one another so our avatars could walk around. We also noticed as the game went on that resources would spawn in spots that would trap us in certain areas. Luckily we were able to chop our way through the trees and grab our little robot friend to help. While the space constraints were there and resources got in the way, we did find ways to make the best out of it and have fun with the area the kingdom provided, so it’s safe to say that these did not take away from the gaming experience as a whole.

There is so little wrong with this DLC that the only issues that are mentionable were those that my co-writer said, which are the space constraints and resources respawning in narrow areas. While I do see the space limitations as another difficulty modifier, the holes around the map were a nuisance. The resources do need to respawn, otherwise you will be managing a finite number of resources and might encounter scenarios that would not let you complete a task, which is against what A World of Keflings is about. Instead I suggest that there are specific places where unlimited resources would spawn. Again, as my co-writer has said, these issues are not game breakers and are for the most part excusable.
For 320 MSP, this add-on is well worth its’ price and it’s safe to say that we both highly recommend getting it. It Came From Outer Space adds extra hours of extraterrestrial Kefling enjoyment to the original game that is sure to make you lose track of time while kicking aliens around and helping.
