Canadians Enjoy Games in the Boudoir: One in Four Admit to Having Played Computer Games in the Bedroom
Over 90 per cent of online Canadians have played computer games, according to a survey released today by Microsoft Canada/ Ipsos Reid
MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO – June 26, 2008 – What are more men than women doing naked behind closed doors? According to the results of an Ipsos-Reid survey released today by Microsoft Canada Co., playing computer games. Seventeen per cent of men with Internet access admitted to gaming without their clothes on, compared to only nine per cent of women. The exhibitionist tendencies of men do not stop at nudity; they are also more likely (23 per cent) than women (15 per cent) to have played a computer game in public.
The survey revealed other gender differences. For example, men (19 per cent) are more likely than women (5 per cent) to have played massively multi-player games like World of Warcraft. The genders agree on taking a mental break with games – 86 per cent of online Canadians have played Windows games like Solitaire or Minesweeper, and 30 per cent of respondents have played computer games at work.
Where Canadians live also factors into their gaming habits. Those most likely to have spent money on a computer game – 63 per cent – live in Ontario, followed by residents of Alberta (57 per cent), Atlantic Canada (53 per cent), British Columbia (52 per cent), Saskatchewan and Manitoba (45 per cent). Only 40 per cent of Quebeckers reported spending money on games.
When asked about their earliest memory of using a computer, one third (34 per cent) of Canadians over 35 recall playing a Windows game such as Solitaire, Free Cell, Mah Jong, or Minesweeper. Forty-three per cent of Canadians aged 18-to-34 first used a computer to play educational games at school, while only eight per cent of those aged 35 to 54 share this memory.

This weekend in Toronto, Microsoft Canada is inviting consumers to learn more about Canada’s passion for computer games and see first-hand how gaming has evolved at “Games for Windows Presents: EVOLUTION: 30 Years of Computer Games.†This Friday, June 27th and Saturday, June 28th at the InterAccess Digital Media Arts Gallery, Canadians can get hands-on with twenty fully-interactive classic computers from 1978 to 2008 running classic favourites like Tetris through to the stunning graphics of Microsoft Game Studios titles Flight Simulator X and Gears of War.
Other interesting survey findings:
• The average age at which online Canadians first played a computer game is 29 years old
• Only 6 per cent of online Canadians indicate that they have never played a computer game
• Thirty per cent of online Canadians say they have played games at work, 27 per cent in the bedroom, and seven per cent in the bathroom
• Online Canadians over 55 joined the ranks of gamers later in life, 56 per cent having played their first computer game when they were over 40
The online survey of 1,026 online Canadian adults was conducted by Ipsos Reid from June 10 to 13, 2008. An unweighted probability sample of this size, with a 100% response rate, would have an estimated margin of error of +/- 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20
