Think you paid too much for your Playstation 3? Don't expect any sympathy from Sony.

In the company's fiscal 2008 annual report, Sony revealed that they've now lost roughly $3.3 billion (that's billion with a B) on the Playstation 3 since its launch. That breaks down to $2.16 billion in 2007, followed by a notably smaller but equally daunting $1.16 billion loss in 2008.

The reason? Pricing the console below its production cost. That's right - that hefty $599 you paid for the PS3 back when it first launched was significantly cheaper than the cost of producing it in the first place, and while the retail price has come down some, the losses keep piling up.

Investors have reason to sweat. In a statement, Sony claimed "the large-scale investment required during the development and introductory period of a new gaming platform may not be fully recovered." They went on to note that they've invested a great deal of money into R&D for the console, a sum they might not be able to recoup if the PS3 "fails to achieve such favorable market penetration."

Sony fanboys should take heart, however. Losing money on hardware is relatively common in the video game biz, as companies routinely lower prices to sell more units and thus stimulate software sales. Sony's game division saw a 26% sales spike last quarter, a trend they expect will continue on the strength of strong exclusives like the recently released Metal Gear Solid 4 and the upcoming sequel Resistance 2.

uhh...Im getting sick and tired of all the fanboy crap that goes on here...Sony has a good console, that suffers from different things...just like the 360 and Wii...and Greenskull, if your going to pull a random statistic out of thin air, hows this...the PS3 outsold the 360 in January...it has a much smaller failure rate (less than 2% compared to Microsofts 35%+)...it has more triple A titles and exclusives hitting this year than the 360...its catching up to Microsoft on all fronts...and its online service is making people question their $50 a year subscription for Xbox LIVE...as for the Profit thing, that was in software...not hardware...they just started making a tiny bit of profit off of each console sold in january, but that doesn't change the fact that they still have ALOT of lost money to catch up to...they haven't broken even yet.

Oh my goodness.

There is going to be some fanboy'ism for the Xbox 360 because this site was primarily inhabited by Xbox 360 owners. If RUL continues to grow, Im sure we will start getting some strict Wii or PS3 owners that will be Fanyboys for that company.

Its not that Im against the PS3, cause Legend Ive discussed the possibility of getting one with you many times, its just that I own an Xbox 360 and a Wii right now and am happy with them and dont see what can get much better with the PS3, other than Little Big Planet of course! :P

They're is nothing wrong with this thread. It is informing us of how sony and the PS3 are doing up to date with they're sells. Someone could go and post the exact thing on how the Xbox and Microsoft are doing. News will be news. Now everyone should just stop with calling each other fanboys.

Who said I was being a fanboy? I just thought it was interesting that they have lost that much to what was supposed to be a pretty successful console. I just don't like the PS3 because of it's lack of games, and the friend system in the online play. It does have MGS4 and GOW2 and a few more good games, but I just don't like them personally, which is the reason I like the 360 better than the PS3, the 360 has much more exclusives that I like, such as the utmost respect for PS3 lovers (Aside from fanboysHalo 3, Dead Rising, Left 4 Dead, Fable 2, Halo Wars, and many more. I have that do nothing but flame the 360 and Wii), they obviously like the PS3's games and other features more than the 360's, why should I care? It's their opinion, sure I disagree with it, but I disagree with a lot of people on a lot of things, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I have no problem with that.

All i said was "Lol, I head about this too" and i am fully aware that most consoles start off as a loss. Another Reason why the PS3 might be at a loss and 360 is at a profit is that 360 has been out a full year longer, who knows maybe this time next year the PS3 will be at a profit

Off-topic: I'm pretty much neutral when it comes to all 3 consoles, but I just so happen to have online accounts for XBL and PSN, that I tend to play and focus on those consoles more (yes I have a Wii).

The thing that I hate is when people who haven't even played or owned the other consoles, evaluate it based on what console(s) they do have and they compare it in every single way to each other, but every console has it's exclusives and different features. Most companies are not going to offer the exact same thing as it's competitors. And also to add to that, every console offers a different experience imo and most of us are already adapted to playing our 360s/Wiis/PS3s to notice that. Unless you do own all the consoles, your opinion doesn't matter to me.
