Command & Conquer Period.

I only touched the newer ones but the older ones are amazing!
I recommend:
Command & Conquer First Decade
C&C 3 Tiberium War
Also (Even though you said no space war games) Dawn of War (1 in particular) is a great RTS.

I concur with C&C but for WW2, Company of Heroes.

That is to bad, I was going to say Dawn Of War, or Dawn of War 2.

If you want something more "Current" or "Past" I would go with Company of Heroes also. Or C&C

Shame that EA took down the servers for this (At least for the xbox I have no clue about PC) but Lord of The Rings: Battle For Middle Earth was an RTS I liked.

I am the RTS master of RUL

I kind of feel like you're missing out on a lot of excellent rts's especially the best one in my opinion anyways here’s my picks for good rts games under those criteria

Supreme commander 2 (1 is also excellent) while sort of spacey isn’t really though it still is futuristic it focuses on huuuuge battles with massive armies it's by far one of my favourites, It's pretty cheap on steam right now and should be reduced further for the Christmas sales

Oddly enough there's a half life rts its a mod, and it’s not bad last I checked it was in beta played a couple rounds it's alright.

Ruse is also an ok rts nothing special though not worth anything over 20 dollars oh yah it's a game focusing on WW2.

Rise of nations if like age of empires except it covers all the ages and sort of goes into the future but nothing too futurey it's an excellent game Same with Rise of legends which is more of a fantasy style rts also very good they are both super cheap right now and super low pc demands so they should run smoothly.

the Warcraft games are also good I would recommend Warcraft 3 and its expansion the frozen throne. Also Warcraft 2 is worth a play as well.

Age of mythology is also a fantasy style game focusing on ancient Greek mythology it’s by far one of the best rts games made to date and the cheats are certainly worth a few laughs.

Empires dawn of the modern world is like age of empires and rise of nations with better graphics and MUCH BIGGER BATTLES I would pick it over the two.

Obviously age of empires 1 and 2 must be played if you have 3 without question.

I would also just like to let you know of a few good futuristic games that are good that you would miss out on

-Sins of a solar empire
-Dawn of war 1 and 2 (smashing good games)
-Starcraft 1 and 2 (my favourites)

Just yea give them a try they're certainly worth it.

I would suggest more "classic" games such as Age of Empires 2, Red Alert 2 and Star Wars: Galactic Battle Grounds
