The Halo Reach Survival Guide
A Work in Progress.
Intro
A lot of people ask me how to better themselves at Halo Reach and it's simple to say, "Oh don't suck at life and practice." But it's more than just practice. There are a lot of key things that come into play when you venture into the world of Matchmaking. You could practice till your eyes bleed, but you'll never go positive in Team Slayer without knowing the ins and outs of it and they're a lot simpler than you may think. So here are some tips!
I will gradually add on to this thread over the coming weeks and add video tutorials found through Youtube. If I had my camera and a capture card on this pc I'd do it myself, but until I do please indulge yourself into this article and you will see a significant improvement to your game!
The Basics
First things first, when you go into a matchmaking playlists there are some main things you're gonna want to take in consideration:
1. Weapon Spawn Locations/Respawn Times (eventually you'll get a "6th Sense.")
2. The Breakout (as in Paintball, you're gonna know where you wanna run at the start.)
3. Where to be on the map at all times (yes, running around all willy nilly is not always the best answer, depending on the scenario, you may need to change up your game.)
4. Best Weapons to use in various scenarios (When going up against certain weapons, Assault Rifle may not be the best option)
5. When to pick a fight and when to back down (This is very important if you want to go positive and ultimately WIN)
6. Communication (It's key and will win you games when facing a tough opponent.)
Weapon Spawns and Why you Want to Know Them!
One of the key things to winning ANY gametype is knowing where the weapons spawn and keeping them from the enemy. It is imperative that your team keep the enemy from getting their hands on the powerweapons scattered across the map because one Rocket Launcher can mean the difference between a close game and a blowout, pun intended.
Games are won and lost over power weapons. Most people develop a 6th sense when it comes to knowing when the weapons spawn. Depending on the gametype and the playlist, all weapons and vehicles have their own respawn timers. So you can time when people pick up the weapon and you can pick it up as soon as it spawns. When the opposing team doesn't know when the weapons spawn, the game goes in your team's favor!
Keep in mind once again, that each gametype and map may have various weapon spawns! Especially MLG! At the beginning of the game you're also gonna want to know which weapon you need to go for and where it is. Having someone assist you get the Rockets is normally a good idea because sometimes the enemy will send their entire team to get that weapon. Tossing tons of grenades is usually a good idea and can sometimes keep the enemy at bay long enough for you or a teammate to snatch that weapon before they can blink. From Sniper Rifles to the Spnkr or whatever tickles your pickle, keep it out of the opposing team's hands especially from the beginning of the game. That should be the first thing you should worry about at the start of each and every game. The loadout cam is a great way to know where your gonna spawn and what weapon is the closest to you. Get the closest one first and if there are rockets on the map, get those ABOVE anything!
Player Spawns and Where to Be on the Map/Team Shooting
Knowing where everyone will spawn is a lot easier than it sounds. Basically know that the enemy won't spawn near you most of the time. So if you see an open area with none of your teammates there, odds are that's where the enemy will spawn. It's that simple. Again, each map may have different spawn locations but odds are this thought process works 90% of the time
So your kicking ass and taking names, but wheres the best spot to do it? Easy. The high ground. Staying on top of the map near the highest point is usually the key to success in most all games and in real life scenarios as trained by the US military. Granted, in some situations this is not the case, but most of the time the high ground is your best bet. You get control of the map, can see everything going on, and the enemy is vulnerable when they have to fight their way up the map to take you out. Most of the time, they won't get far.
Here's a good example of how important the high ground is:
Sticking closely to your teammates is a good thing and Assists will win games. Having your teammate put shots into an enemy gives you a greater chance of living after the fight. If you become one shot, back down and let your teammate jump in. Sometimes the enemy will get confused thinking that player is you and the teammate takes him out and your shields recharge. Their team doesn't gain a point and your team gains one. It's a win win situation. So be sure not to go Rambo all the time and don't start fights you know you won't win. Going against 2 or 3 players is not a good idea so wait for a teammate to get near or run like hell and get the advantage!
Here's a good example of how important team shooting and overall teamwork is:
When going one on one always aim for the head in a dmr duel and if you become close to dying jump or do some crazy maneuvering to psyche out your opponent. Sometimes this works, but seasoned Halo players won't fall for this. Always do something tricky and sometimes you'll outsmart them.
Best thing I can tell you is be SMART and STAY ALIVE. Less deaths are way better than more kills! Keep this in mind and your KD Ratio will rise. Also, the more time you stay alive the less time you'll be respawning which means more kills!
